BIRGIT AND I TRAVELLED TO Japan in May of 2014 to visit Princess Takamado, an old friend and a member of the Japanese royal family who happens to be an avid birder (the up-at-5:00 a.m. variety) and a very good bird photographer. She and her late husband, Prince Takamado, had been patrons of an exhibition of my art held at the Canadian embassy in Tokyo in 1991, and we had seen her several times since in her capacity as honourary president of Birdlife International, the world’s largest nature conservation partnership. We are members, as are some prominent Canadian birders, such as authors Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson. In the fall of 2013 Birgit and I had lunch with Princess Takamado in Victoria. It was then that she invited us to go birding with her in Okinawa and the Nagano Highlands the following spring.

It was like no other trip, all of it planned by the princess. I was strongly influenced by Japanese art and architecture, even before our first visit. For the Okinawa part of the trip, we were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Senge. He was an amateur bird photographer. We did not know his background but were told he was paying for the vehicle rental. Noriko, the daughter of Princess Takamado, was also with us photographing birds.
